Local Area Information

Vélez-Málaga itself, as capital of the region, is a large, working town, but its historical centre contains some fascinating buildings, churches and museums through which to understand more about the history of the town and surrounding areas - and all within easy walking distance of Carrasco 4.  When you are hungry you need not worry!  There is a myriad of bakeries, cafés, tapas bars and restaurants catering to all tastes, and the local fish and seafood restaurants are simply some of the best in the area.

The Thursday morning outdoor market has stalls with fresh, local produce, herbs and spices, clothes, leather goods, and just about anything else you might need.

The surrounding area is green with fruit trees - olives and almonds, of course, but also citrus, avocado and mango.  The Axarquia produces olives and olive oil, Miel de Caña (molasses), wine, mango gin, guacamole, roasted almonds, raisins and speciality biscuits and bread.  The new Mercado de San Francisco (2018) has cafés and shops serving local produce.

Lake Viñuela is just 10 minutes north of Vélez-Málaga, where you can horse ride, kayak and sail, or just picnic, hike and enjoy the stunning scenery. (See "Plan A" in links page)

Baviera Golf is 10 minutes away by car, and Añoreta Golf just 20 minutes away.

There are five routes to drive around the Axarquia, declared "Tourist Interest of Andalusia", via which you can experience the range of attractions offered by this region and its 31 municipalities. They are: Mudejar, Sun & Avocado, Sun & Wine, Oil & Mountains, and Raisin. (See links)

The "Mi Velez Malaga" website (see links) is perfect for discovering more about all aspects of Vélez-Málaga, and now sets out five fabulous cycle routes around the region.

The cities of Málaga, Granada, Ronda, Córdoba and Sevilla, and the Rock of Gibraltar, are near enough for a day visit.
